Example (fictional data)

A five-person software company in Manchester built a new matching engine this year. The founder answers a short questionnaire by email, sends the payroll summary and the cloud invoices, and receives the cost calculation, the draft Additional Information Form and a four-page technical report to approve. The accountant files the claim with the CT600.

How it works

Small UK companies that carry out research and development can claim tax relief on the costs of that work through their company tax return. Since 2024 most claims go through the merged scheme, and loss-making R&D intensive companies have their own enhanced support.

Every claim now needs an Additional Information Form sent to HMRC before the return, with the projects, the qualifying costs and a description of the work. Without it the claim is removed. Answers to common questions are in the questions section, and you can start at the bottom of the page.

Claim R&D does one narrow job: it prepares your R&D claim by email, for a fixed fee.

We work out the qualifying costs: the share of staff time spent on the projects, subcontractors and externally provided workers, software, cloud computing and data, and consumables, with the restrictions that apply to overseas work.

We prepare the Additional Information Form with the projects and the figures, so it can be submitted before the company tax return.

We write the technical report: what advance in science or technology the company was seeking, what was uncertain at the start, and what work was done to resolve it, in words a competent professional would recognise.

Everything happens by email: a short questionnaire, the payroll summary and the invoices you already have, and one round of questions on the projects. There are no calls or meetings to book.

The fee is fixed per claim and agreed before we start. It does not depend on the size of your relief, so a larger claim does not cost you more.

It is meant for small limited companies — software studios, engineering firms, product start-ups and manufacturers — that do their own development and want a clear, documented claim.

If a project does not qualify, we say so before preparing the claim, and you do not pay for a claim that should not be made.

All working papers stay with you, so you can answer an HMRC enquiry with the same figures and the same report.

The cost calculation shows each figure with its source — which payroll month, which invoice — so your accountant can check it line by line before filing.

To start, you need your company's accounting period, a list of the projects you worked on and your payroll and supplier records for that period.

Claim R&D prepares the claim documents; the company decides whether to claim, and the claim is filed with the company tax return by the company or its accountant.
